I purchased this book because the author's premise of using just hand tools to produce some shop projects was appealing to me. Mr. Fidgen does a great job of describing the use of each tool, and his instructions are paired with numerous, beautiful color photographs. I particularly enjoyed the small 'Tips' boxes scattered throughout his book as they offered timely insights and sage advice in small, easy to digest portions.Overall, this is a terrific book, but what truly sets it apart from it's peers, and the reason why you should include it in your library, is the sheer quality and scope of it's projects: Each and every one is gorgeous in it's design and functionality, and each one literally screams out to be made. From the gentleman's valet to the library card holder, each project hails from a bygone era but each one has decidedly modern applications.I have never been so inspired by a book's projects and I'm indebted to Mr. Fidgen for giving me the mojo to get back into my shop and create rather than camping out in front of a TV watching others create. I buy a lot of books: both in print and for my Kindle app. My taste in books range from history to crime mystery to woodworking and everything in between.I am an advanced hobbyist woodworker. I have done projects burning electrons and I've done projects entirely without electricity. I am also an old tool accumulator, with all types of antique & vintage handtools. While looking over some books for reading through the holidays, I came across Fidgen's book, and ordered a print copy from Amazon. It arrived and I must say I am very glad I did as it is simply excellent. The book includes a number of projects, mainly small in scope but very interesting to the point of my planning to build a few. One of the projects, the "kerfing saw" was thought of by the author and is one of those things that leave you wondering "why didn't I think of this?".I could go on, but will conclude by simply stating that there are many woodworking books out there with some of questionable use. This one is not a member of that category. This book is entertaining to read and also will inspire you to build a few of the projects described.
